The Coronavirus Pandemic has had a devastating financial impact across society over recent months, affecting individuals, businesses and charities alike. With Christmas Markets and other such events cancelled this year, one Barnsley resident is doing something to try and support local independent businesses while also raising money for Barnsley Hospice, which like many charities, has had all their scheduled fundraising events cancelled.
Santa Frankuse of Royston, Barnsley, has set up a virtual Christmas Market through a Facebook group which is nearing 300 members. The group brings together the owners of local, independent businesses and people wishing to support them in the run up to Christmas. It provides a place for these businesses to reach customers and sell their products and in return, each business is asked to donate a raffle prize, with the proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets going to Barnsley Hospice.
So far, the Virtual Christmas Market has over 20 businesses involved which have agreed to donate prizes and over 300 people in the group who are supporting these local businesses. The group features a huge variety of businesses selling a range of products, many of which are homemade or locally produced. These include stocking fillers, lots Christmas activities for kids, hand-made jewellery, homewares, beauty products and many more. While the business side of Santa’s venture is booming, the fundraising raffle still needs some support. Tickets are only £2 each or £10 for 6 and all proceeds go directly to Barnsley Hospice with prizes being drawn in mid-December. However, you can continue to buy Christmas presents from the sellers in the group beyond this. Some of the raffle prizes available include a Temple Spa voucher, family photoshoot and children’s book bundle amongst many more!
There’s lots of ways you can get involved with the Virtual Christmas Market. Anyone is welcome to join the Facebook group ‘Virtual Christmas 2020’. From there you can discover and support local businesses; every purchase and even just a like and follow can make a big difference to a small business! You can also find further information and enter the raffle through the Facebook group. Be sure to get your tickets soon to help support a great cause!
