Privacy
Your details.
What we collect, why, and how to get rid of it.
What we collect
- Competition entries: your name, email address and mobile number. We also keep a scrambled form of the network address your entry came from, and never the address itself. It cannot be turned back into your address, and we use it only to spot someone entering a draw many times.
- Email sign-ups: your email address (and your name, if you gave it in a competition entry and ticked the box to get our emails).
- A record that your email address has been confirmed: once you confirm a competition entry by email, we keep a scrambled code made from your email address (never the address itself) so we know not to ask you again. It cannot be turned back into your address, and it stays after your entries are deleted, until you ask us to remove it.
- Visit statistics: we count visits to our pages without cookies and without anything that identifies a person. To count how many different people visited in a day, we keep a one-day scrambled code made from your connection and browser for up to two days. It cannot be turned back into your address and it changes every day, so it cannot follow you. We do not count visitors whose browser tells us not to track them.
What we use it for
- Competition details are used to run the draw and to contact the winner. To keep it to one entry per person, we compare the email address (ignoring a +tag, and the dots in a Gmail address) and the mobile number of each entry. Another entry with the same email or number is not counted.
- Signing up for our emails (the pop-up, the footer box or the sign-up page) takes effect straight away: you are on our list as soon as you press the button, and we send nothing to check it.
- The first time you enter a competition, we send one email to the address you gave, with a button to confirm it. That entry only counts once you have pressed the button: until then it is not in the draw. If you ticked the box for our emails on the entry, the same press puts you on our list. Every entry has a ticket number (such as SCS-000042), shown to you when you enter and in our emails.
- Once you have confirmed your email address for an entry, your later entries count straight away with no confirmation, and we send you an email with the ticket number to keep for reference. If you ticked the box for our emails on one of those entries, you are put on our list when you enter. If we have switched confirmation off, every entry counts straight away and gets that email.
- We send at most three emails a day to one address for competition entries, and we keep a scrambled code of the address (never the address itself) for two days to count them.
- We send the Standard's emails only to people who asked for them: by signing up, or by ticking the box on a competition entry.
- We do not sell your details, and we do not give them to anyone to market to you.
Where it is kept
Your details are stored with our hosting provider, Cloudflare, and are only seen by the people who run the paper.
Unsubscribing
Every email we send to our list has an unsubscribe link. Press it and we stop emailing you. We keep your address on our list, marked as unsubscribed, so we know not to email you. Signing up again on this site does not switch your emails back on: we only do that if you ask us to. If you would rather we deleted your address altogether, ask us below.
Asking us to delete your details
To see what we hold about you, or to have it removed, message @steelcity.standard on Instagram. Tell us the email address you used and we will sort it out. We delete your subscriber record, the scrambled record that your email address was confirmed, and every competition entry that used that address (or a version of it with a +tag, or dots in a Gmail address). If you were the drawn winner of a competition, the draw is cleared.
