GRAND FINAL WEEK
SCREAMING JETS: Flights grounded as Knights battle cry expected to exceed 500 decibels
LOUDER THAN AN F-35 OVER WILLIAMTOWN: This Masthead can confirm the man behind the microphone has issued one final directive to the people of the Hunter ahead of Sunday.
Glen Hawke, Knights ground announcer for 24 seasons and the voice that has hauled Newcastle to its feet more times than anyone can count, has one job this weekend: make sure the whole country hears us.
Sources close to the microphone tell us Hawke was on the hill in a Knights jersey at the club’s very first game in 1988. He has been asking for noise ever since, and Newcastle has been happy to supply it.
This Masthead approached him for comment. He politely declined, on the grounds that he is saving his voice for Sunday. We respect that. Our own voice gave out on Tuesday, somewhere between the Obelisk and the Henny Penny drive-through.
His message to the faithful, we are told, is simple: when the call comes, answer it. And don’t make him ask twice.
Residents of Williamtown, who know a thing or two about noise, have been advised to secure loose windows and warn the neighbours.
WE NEED TO HEAR YOU NEWCASTLE.
